Handspor means "talon" or "claw" in Old Maelan.

Morgen

Morgen, age 28 at the time of Prelude (354 RK), is the daughter of Tholig[1] and Saelig[2], wife of Cédrisc and mother of Selen. She is also an escaped slave of the Somstrynd Clans. Due to a "slave mark" (tattoo or brand) she received during her time with the Somstrynd, Morgen always wears sleeved dresses even in very warm conditions. The name Morgen means "morning" in Old Maelan.

Early Life in the Feralands

Morgen was born in Lamniemalos region in 326 RK to a struggling family that once supported House Sólstán. Consistent persecution in the region caused Morgen's family to flee the region in 331 RK by way of the Haefecas region of the Visheval Mountains with the help of Gebyld[3], a female Haefecas captain. The family then settled south of the Vally of Hréctan (then called the Gap of Methandos) and established a farm in Tilethe.

Rise of Thenodar and Sale into Slavery

After settling in the Feralands and living there until 337 RK, Tholig tried to find a way to move the family north to the friendly state of Mosvaseb. However, increased slave trafficking and scouts of the Somstrynd Clans through the Gap of Methandos made such a move difficult to plan. Not willing to risk his daughter's safety, Morgen's father decides to remain in the area.

However, in 338 RK Mosvaseb falls and in 339 RK, the region surrounding the Gap of Methandos is devastated by the forces of the new Kingdom of Thenodar and the Kingdom of Anorthile in the Battle of Hréctan. The skirmishes that follow and the mere presence of the combined forces put a heavy strain on the region, which had already suffered a weak harvest in 338. This weak harvest is followed up by a severe drought in 340 RK, a drought that hits towns like Tilethe that were supported by small farms particularly hard.

At this point, the settlement where Morgen lived is abandoned by all but her family. Some died in the conflict, others left due to the weak harvest and growing Somstrynd activity. This growing famine and the damage done by the conflict between Thenodar and Anorthile prompted Morgen's father to attempt a move north to join the Kingdom of Thenodar in early fall 340 RK. However, Somstrynd scouts block the way. Realizing that he can't go back to the barren farm and last through the winter, Morgen's father decides to sell his family into slavery.

He leads his family to the southern Visheval and approaches Clan Haefecas. He makes an agreement that he will become a slave and work in the mines of Morsael if the Somstrynd agree to sell his daughter and wife in Nosmalos, where they will be safe and well cared for. The Helm of Clan Haefecas agrees and sends the family to Holenburg. They stay there for the duration of the winter.

Escape from the Somstrynd and Meeting with Cédrisc

During the spring, a meeting of the captains and Helms of the Somstrynd takes place in Holenburg. Morgen and her mother catch the eye of Rencu[4], a Wulfas captain. He convinces Seolfor[5], the Helm of Clan Holnas, to go back on the deal that Clan Haefecas made and give Morgen and her mother to him. Tholig protests, but is locked up in a separate cell from his wife and daughter.

Realizing what would happen to Morgen, her father pleads with an ally from Haefecas - Gebyld (now a captain), the same one that helped them pass through Clan Haefecas's land years prior - to help them escape. Knowing the cruelty of Rencu and taking pity on Morgen and her mother, Gebyld agrees to help them. She frees Morgen, Saelig and Tholig and helps them escape Holenburg.

However, they are spotted and Tholig and the Gebyld stay behind and fight to stall them. They are both killed. Morgen and her mother move west across the Visheval but are pursued by agents of Clan Wulfas. One of these agents - Faengtóth[6], Wulfas's best agent for retrieving fleeing slaves and one of their finest spies as well as Théotan's[7] right hand man - catches up to them. Morgen's mother is injured but Morgen manages to slash is left eye, leaving him in agony and causing him to retreat. Despite Morgen's initial protests, her mother managed to convince her to continue fleeing down the mountain without her as she can't continue with her wounds. Morgen's mother was not seen again.

Morgen fled northwest down the mountain until she finally collapses nearly due east of Bordrima. She is found by Cédrisc the next day, who was pursuing brigand bands in Faesholt. He protects her and takes her to Bordrima where she stays with his family.

While this caused a rift between Cédrisc and his brother Bordrand, Morgen has little opinion on the matter, though she is resolute that the town needs to take threats from the Somstrynd seriously.
