The Demo is the first planned release (or, at least, first executable package for an outside audience) of The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order.

Summary

The Demo is currently being developed by Epoch Games as a private demo of the game to present to Epic Games for a chance to receive grant money. This Grant money, if received, will go mostly towards development costs (current web-hosting, Epoch Games incorporation and trademarks and Software Licenses), along with the first payment to team members. Whether a Grant is earned or not, the Demo can be used for promotional purposes, and most (if all) assets will go towards development of the Prelude.

The Demo is centered around a short questline introducing characters that will appear in future releases while presenting basic game mechanics and development philosophies.

Features

These are the current features that should be developed for the completion of the Demo:

  • Locomotion Controls: The Player Character (PC) should be able to Walk and Run (by clicking Caps Lock to switch, where Walk is Caps Lock On and Run is Caps Lock Off; Walk/Run does not deplete Stamina) and Sprinting (Holding Shift sprints; sprinting depletes Stamina). Stamina bar heals if the Player Character is walking/running slowly, and faster if the Player Character is standing still.

Locomotion Animations: We will be using ARTv1 animations.

  • Basic Melee Combat: Sword and Shield, and Unarmed, Combat-styles should exist in the engine, with Mouse-based Controlled Movement to allow for different weapon/arm swings. PC and NPCs should be able to execute both styles of combat.
    • Short Sword with/without Shield
  • Basic NPC AI: There should be basic NPC AI. NPCs can walk, run, sprint and be talked to.
  • Basic Combat AI: They should have basic AI for fighting with sword and shield.
  • UE4 Branching Dialog Editor: There should be a Branching NPC Conversation Editor in UE4, which visually shows the progression of branching dialogs.
  • Basic Inventory Menu: Certain items can be picked up and dropped in the world, equipment equipped on the character in the Inventory Menu, and basic stats of equipment shown.
  • Demo Questline: See below.

Release

The Demo should not be released to the public: it would likely be a poor first impression of the game to the public.

Completion of the Demo is currently estimated to occur at the end of 2019.
