This is a detailed account of the events that have taken place within Althas before recorded time.

This is Part 1 in the Timeline series of articles, and continues into Part 2.

Before recorded time

This period comes before Man has numbered his days, so no dates in this period are certain. What is generally agreed upon by most historians are the order of their occurrence.

Creation

  • Mellendil, who predates time, creates Zidromi, his realm to rule from, and the Shesethos as his servants within it.
  • Mellendil creates Ethesh, and all life within it.
    • Most important of all was the creation of Man on the world of Jevreth. Men were placed on the continent of Althas in the forest of Vossôthos.
    • Man is immortal and, in time, builds a realm there.
  • Man is given the “Celestial language” to communicate with one another, the heavenly tongue that the Shesethos have always used. This tongue has no written form.

The Zidromi War and Man's Fall

  • While the realm of Men grows, The Zidromi War rages within Mellendil's realm, fought between those that wish to serve Mellendil, and those that do not. Those that rebelled against Mellendil are cast out.
    • The fallen Shesethos become known as the Drevril.
  • The Drevril plot to corrupt and destroy Mellendil’s creation, starting with Man. They send down the first Night Stones to the realm of Men.
    • The Dominion Stone tempts Man to distrust Mellendil and look to its power to grow their realm and increase in prosperity. Eventually, many elders believe and begin using the Stone’s power, rejecting Mellendil’s guidance. [1]
    • Over time, the people are all deceived and turn in defiance of Mellendil.

The Rise of The Dominion

  • The realm of Men grows and becomes more powerful. Men have become mortal now that they are tainted with evil. [2]
    • The realm becomes a kingdom, known later only as The Dominion, ruled over by "The Majestic". [3]
    • The Dominion grows in power. It is divided into eight major Tribes, each of whom work to support the kingdom in their own way.
  • As the centuries passed, Man descends into ever greater evil until finally people began to fear what they had brought on themselves. Many begin to doubt the King and their choice to follow the Stone. The King begins to oppress the people to keep them in line.
  • Realizing their mistake, many of the people in The Dominion begin to seek Mellendil again. One man rises to lead them. Mellendil hears this Man; he is appointed the first of the Diasairos, and given a new name: Losdejim [4]
  • The words of Losdejim spreads like wildfire. Seven of the Eight Tribes of The Dominion rise up against The Majestic. [5]
    • The seven overcome The Majestic and the supporters (The Eighth Tribe). The Night Stone is destroyed and the King slain.
  • The remnants of the Eighth Tribe flee Vossôthos. [6]
  • With the Night Stone destroyed, Losdejim is looked to as the de facto leader. The Dominion continues into a new age of uncertainty, but the people have mostly acknowledged Mellendil again. [7]

Notes

This section contains footnotes for the overall Timeline.

  1. Man cannot be possessed or controlled by a Night Stone at this point in time.
  2. Although they're mortal, their life spans are still of extraordinary length; no one notices their mortality yet.
  3. "The Majestic" is the only known ruling figurehead of The Dominion.
  4. The meaning of Losdejim's name remains hidden. It is revealed when Noralar is created twenty years later, a sign of Mellendil’s providence and sovereignty.
  5. The majority of the eighth division, however, stays on the side of the King.
  6. These survivors will divide into three groups:
      • One group heads to the East and settles near Thalomvob. This group hides in fear at first, but later repents of their sins and sues for peace with Gorandel (once the kingdom has been built and has expanded east to include Thalomvob). These people become the Thalom Sebairos.
      • The second group vows to fight on against Driomi. They scatter into the lands of Althas and settle in small towns and villages. They later conceal who they are when The Anointed expand their realms. Others in this group infiltrate and cause general problems for the Anointed early on.
      • The third group will split off from the second a couple generations later. They will repent for their misdeeds and, as penance for their forbearers’ sins, will vow to fight for the Diasairos and help them fulfill their purposes. This group will become zealots that hold no allegiance towards any one faction, but only to the Diasairos themselves. Over time, they will spawn an order of zealots that include any who would seek penance for their past. Their numbers and validity shall be in flux throughout the millennia, but they will be an ever-present group (to some extent).
  1. By the end of this period, people begin to realize their vulnerability to the passage of time, as more and more grow older and weaker.
