Lore:The War of Attainment

The War of Attainment was a civil war for attainment of the Anorthile crown that occured between 155 to 158 RK.

Etallethor had usurped the crown in years prior, and Thrûdre, the rightful Anointed heir to the throne, challenged Etallethor's lineage and eventually won his rightful title as King of Anorthile.

History

The Battle of the Southern Vale

• 155 RK: Thrûdre gathered his Eänos, Vellevri and Southern Vale allies in Anorthile.
  • Thrûdre's main host attacked west across the Southern Vales. [1]
  • Lossifeäl journied to Vellevri to tell them the truth about Etallethor. [2]

The First and Second Sieges of Vellevri

• Spring 156, RK: Etallethor's host besieged Vellevri twice, but failed to break through the defenses. [3]
  • Thrûdre organized up a blockade in the southern passage after noticing several ships with supplies sailing out of the east to Sheäjathi. [4]
• Early Summer 156 RK: Oldest Son of the King, the oldest of the two sons of King of Nosmalos, meets with Doleb and the Vasomi of Nosmalos. He revealed to them that the Merchant Nobles were the ones supporting Etallethor under the direction of his father. Oldest Son of the King disagreed strongly with his father's support for Etallethor and asked if the Vasomi would assist him in dethroning his father. They agreed.
  • Doleb sent word of this news to Thrûdre and asked for his assistance in overthrowing the King. Thrûdre agreed he would assist at the start of the new year. He organized a host of exiled Vasomi of Anorthile and elite warriors to sail sectrely to Nosmalos.

The Third Siege of Vellevri and The Battle of the South Sea

• Late Summer, 156 RK: Etallethor host besieged Vellevri once more. To divert Etallethor's attention, Thrûdre sent a host to attack Southern Anorthile and capture Sheäjathi.
  • Thrûdre's host initially won in several engagements in the south, and eventually reached the city. While Etallethor's northern hosts are driven south to assist, the combined strength of the northern and southern hosts put Thrûdre's host on the defensive. [5]
• Mid Fall, 156 RK: A fleet of Merchant Noble ships, captained by Nosmalos Mercenaries, broke Thrûdre’s blockade in the South. Thrûdre’s remaining naval fleet were forced to fall back to defend the port of Eänos. [6]

The Battle Under the Moon

• Beginning of Winter, 156 RK: A group of men in Vellevri, working as double agents to Etallethor, betrayed the city by opening its gates in the night. Etallethor's host entered the city.
  • The Lord of Vellevri was executed and his son son put in prison and The Drithrûi were imprisoned. [7]
  • Lossifeäl was smuggled out of the city. [8]
  • Thrûdre rescinds his agreement to assist in dethroning the King of Nosmalos, but is unable to contact the Vasomi of Nosmalos. [9]

The Oath of Lord of the fortress

• Mid Winter, 156 RK: Thrûdre sent a special host of several Vasomi, and with Lossifeäl in disguise, to reach out to the Lord of the fortress. Lossifeäl’s words convinced the Lord of the fortress and he joined Thrûdre’s cause. [10]
  • Lord of the fortress addressed his Men. attempting to persuade them to renounce their oath to Etallethor and support Thrûdre. Many join him, but not all. There is a skirmish in the outer courts, and Thrûdre's supporters drove out those in support of Etallethor. [11]

The Failed Usurption of King of Nosmalos

• Beginning of 157 RK: The Vasomi of Nosmalos began to put their plan into motion, but realize too late that Thrûdre was able to aid them. They chose to proceed. The plan nearly succeeded, but the usurpers are caught and exposed before King of Nosmalos.
  • The King disowned Son of the King, who had conspired against him, and named his youngest son Young Son of the King his heir.
  • The Vasomi are condemned along with the Temple. The Vasomi of Nosmalos are outlawed, and many leaders (including Doleb) are killed. The Vasomi go into hiding throughout Nosmalos. [12
• Late Winter, 157 RK: A lone messenger arrived in Eänos from Nosmalos. He informed Thrûdre of the failed overthrow. [13

The Siege of the fortress

• Early to Late Spring, 157 RK: Etallethor mobilized all of his northern hosts and besieged the the fortress in the southern Capital Vale. Throughout the season, several minor assaults and bombardments were launched against the fortress.

The Battle Under the Stars

• Early Spring, 157 RK: Thrûdre developed a plan to take Sheäjathi. He sent Lossifeäl and several Vasomi in disguise to sneak into the city and meet with his contacts there. They hijacked a ship and sailed for Vishethas. [14
• Mid Spring, 157 RK: Thrûdre and the Drithûi retake Vellevri. [15
  • son, the son of the former Lord of Vellevri, takes his place as ruler of the city. Vellevri gathered all the people and supplies it could from the surrounding area as quickly as they could.
  • With Vellevri back in Thrûdre’s hands, Etallethor was forced to divert a large part of his hosts to guard his flank, relieving pressure on the fortress.

The Western Alliance

• Late Spring, 157 RK: Lossifeäl, and the Vasomi with him, sailed from Sheäjathi and arrived in Vishethas. Lossifeäl convenes with Gelfin and the King of Vishethas, disclosing the crimes of Etallethor. Outraged by Etallethor’s deceit and usurpation, The King agrees to send aid and Gelifin vows the Vasomi of Vishethas oppose Etallethor.
  • Vishethas prepares a fleet to send to Anorthile.
  • Lossifeäl departed from Vishethas shortly thereafter and sailed for Lore:Vithile.
• Early Summer, 157 RK: Lossifeäl lands in Lore:Vrathiro and convenes with the Lord of Vrathiro, the Lord of Vrathiro. The Diasair revealed Etallethor’s treachery and the real reason for his abandonment of the vassals and allies in The Feralands.
  • Lord of Vrathiro calls for council with Lord of Haefen, the Lord of Haefen. They agree to pledge their support for Thrûdre and form the Vithile Alliance.
  • A fleet from Vrathiro prepared to sail south to Anorthile's eastern shore, and a host from Haefen began to gather around Vithile Bay.

The Battle of Sheäjathi

• Mid Summer, 157 RK: The fleets of Vishethas sailed for Sheäjathi, and Thrûdre sends a host to Sheäjathi. [16
  • In a surpise attack, Vishethas's naval fleet assaulted western Sheäjathi by sea, Vishethas's land fleet assulted southern Sheäjathi and Thrûdre's host assulted northern Sheäjathi. Taken from most sides, the city falls.
  • The remnants of Etallethor’s Southern Anorthile's hosts retreat into the forests south of the city. [17
• Late Summer, 157 RK: Etallethor’s fleet attacks Vishethas’s fleets from the south, but are driven off by Vishethas’s superior numbers. [18

The War of the South

• Early Fall, 157 RK: The Vrathiro fleet arrived in Sheäjathi with supplies and lands a host of marines south of the forest. They coordinate a multi-pronged offensive with Thrûdre's Southern Host into the forest. After initial resistance, Etallethor's southern remnants in the forest collapse.
  • Thrûdre prepared a host to head north in force to attack the Capital Vale.

The War of the Capital Vale

The Siege of the North Towers

• Mid Fall, 157 RK: The Haefen host besieged the towers guarding the northern pass into the Capital Vale. Etallethor is forced to divert his armies from the south and east to push the Haefan host back.

The Battle for the Vale of Dawn

• Late fall, 157 RK: The Haefen host renewed their siege on the towers and pushed Etallethor's defense back.
  • Thrûdre's Drithûi in Vellevri drive Etallethor out of the Vale of Dawn. They set up defenses in the pass into the Capital Vale.

The Battle for the South Pass

• Winter, 157 RK: Thrûdre’s southern host arrived south of the Capital Vale. They drove Etallethor’s vanguard out of the southern pass into the Capital Vale, and forced him to lift the siege of the fortress. [19
  • With Sheäjathi fallen and Etallethor’s defeat all but ensured, the Merchant Nobles of Nosmalos withdrew their support and attempted (unsuccessfully) to destroy all evidence of their involvement.

The Battle of Thavairos

• Late Winter, 158 RK: Thrûdre prepared for his final assault on the Capital Vale. His hosts prepared to besiege Thavairos, slowly encircling it while the forces from Haefen and Vellevri shielded his northeastern flank from Etallethor’s host in The King’s Citadel.
  • The hosts of Vrathiro and Vishethas besieged the stronghold of The People’s Council at the western end of the Capital Vale.
  • Before Thavairos was completely cut off, Lossifeäl sliped into the city with the last of the refugees. He met secretly with Zomar, master of Anorthile’s chapter of the Vasomi. [20
• Early Spring, 158 RK: Thrûdre's hosts besieged. During the siege, Thavairos Vasomi launched their attack: They opened the gates for Thrûdre’s hosts and take Etallethor’s supporters by surprise. The city is taken by the Drithûi. [21

The Surrender of stronghold

• Early Spring, 158 RK: Zomar leads a force of Vasomi and Thavairos Drithûi and capture stronghold, the stronghold of The People’s Council.

Etallethor's Last Stand

• Mid Spring, 158 RK: Realizing he had lost the War, Etallethor decided to lead an assault. Etallethor’s host marches southwest, pushing against the center of Thrûdre’s host. [22
  • Thrûdre and his knight guard halted his advance.
  • Zomar and Gelifin lead the Vasomi in a flanking maneuver, drove into Etallethor’s north flank and pushed through to The King's Citadel, which cut him off.
  • Thrûdre pushed forward and defeated Etallethor personally. With Etallethor dead, Lafethair surrendered The Citadel peacefully.

Terminology

Drithûi

The Drithûi was a name given to the most fervent of Anorthan who supported Thrûdre during the war.

Notes

1. Thrûdre’s attack secured the entire northern half of Anorthile southern regions, which cut off Sheäjathi from Thavairos and divided Etallethor’s strength.
2. Lossifeäl's words spread from Vellevri to Thavairos. Etallethor was hesitant to attack Vellevri due to its significance as a cultural and religious center, not as a center of war.

   • In Mid Fall, the Vasomi became divided as some of those who were secretly among the Drithrûi began to gather a following despite Lossifeäl being declared a false prophet.
   • Knowing that the execution of a Vasomi would cause an uproar, Etallethor exiled the members who supported Thrûdre before he would besiege Vellevri.
3. Vellevri stood strong due to the many Vasomi exiles who defend it. Etallethor was also hesitant to cause any heavy damage to the city.
4. Thrûdre suspected these ships to be have been recruited by Etallethor.
5. Thrûdre was forced to hold his position south of Sheäjathi, which allowed Etallethor’s hosts to shore up the defenses of the city.
6. Thrûdre's loss restored support to Etallethor’s hosts in Sheäjathi.
7. The Drithûi were not executed as most of them were Vasomi: their execution would have caused an uproar.
8. Lossifeäl ws smuggled through a secret pass under the mountains south of the city to escape to Eänos. From there he escaped into the Southern Vales where his words stir up even more support for Thrûdre’s cause.
9. Having lost Vellevri, his hosts pinned, and communication with Nosmalos cut off, Thrûdre was unable call off the plan to dethrone Nosmalos's King. With his momentum stalled, he decided he must retake Vellevri and break Sheäjathi if he is to win the war. However, he had to first secure his northern flank and thus decided he would not help The Vasomi in Nosmalos.
10. Most of Etallethor’s hosts in the north were either camped at Vellevri or had fallen back to the Capital Vale for the Winter, which allowed Thrûdre and the Drithûi easier access to the fortress.
11. After infiltrating the fortress, they speak with Thrûdre’s contacts and agents; they were able to secure a meeting with Lossifeäl and Lord of the fotresses, who is one of Anorthile’s top officials. Lossifeäl had been a close friend of Lord of the fotresses's father and brother, which gave much sway to Lossifeäl's words.

    • While the Vasomi stay, the Lord of the fotresses has Lossifeäl sent back to Thrûdre to inform him that the fortress is not as well manned as it once was and won’t be able to hold back Etallethor’s full strength for very long.
12. The Temple of Nosmalos would be merged with The Academy and made only a minor school within the organization, their leaders stripped of their power. The Academy was brought under the control of the King via supervising agents (who would have ties to the Merchant Nobles).
13. Thrûdre realized he must now find a way to get help from friends beyond Anorthile’s borders and break Sheäjathi immediately.
14. Thrûdre hoped that Etallethor’s ships would be too busy watching the southern passage to be able to catch the hijacked ship.
15. A host of Drithûi (prepared originally to help the Vasomi) were sent to Vellevri, secretly using the same pass under the mountains that Lossifeäl used to escape.

    • A small band of Drithûi infiltrated the city in the dead of night. One group of Drithûi freed the prisoners while the other opened the gate to the city. This allowed Thrûdre's full host into the city and Villevri was retaken.
16. Etallethor was not yet aware Vishethas had declared war on him and his fleets were too far south to alert him of the fleets’ approach.

    • Vishethas sent secret messengers in their fleet to Thrûdre to let him know the fleets arrived.
17. Thrûdre sends some of his strength north to further reinforce the northern front. Gelifin leads the Vasomi of Vishethas there as well. Most of Thrûdre’s forces remain behind in Sheäjathi to secure the southern lands.
18. While Etallethor's fleet catches Vishethas’s fleets off guard and causes some damage, it is not enough to win the naval battle.

    • The remaining Nosmalos mercenaries in the fleet disembark into the Anorthile southern forests to join the resisting hosts there, setting up a stern defense in the forest.
19. As the forces settle into winter camps, Thrûdre now holds all the passes into the Capital Vale. However, Etallethor’s supporters remained resistant and small skirmishes and raids occur througout the winter.
20. Zomar had not yet sworn allegiance to Etallethor in battle, but he had also not opposed him neither.

    • Lossifeäl revealed the truth of Etallethor’s usurpation and murders. However, unlike the other people he had spoken to, he also informed Zomar of Etallethor’s allegiance with the Merchant Nobles of Nosmalos and the horrible crimes committed against the Vasomi by them.
    • Zomar was deeply grieved by what he has heard and makes immediate contact with masters of The Temple and Academy. All agreed to follow the words of Lossifeäl.
21. When the Thavairos people see Zomar and the Vasomi in support of Thrûdre, as well as Thrûdre’s valor in battle, many immediately broke their allegiance to Etallethor and joined as Drithûi.

    • The city fell fairly quickly and with far less bloodshed than expected.
22. When Etallethor's defenders see that Thavairos and the Vasomi have joined Thrûdre’s cause, most join him. The rest of Etallethor’s supporters surrender peacefully.

    • Now the full strength of Thrûdre and his allies are brought to bear their strength against The King’s Citadel.
23. Knowing that Thrûdre was leading the host and was the last Anointed Anorthile heir besides Lafethair, he intended to try and draw Thrûdre out and kill him.
